How to Connect with Your Body

At The Agenda. We often hear from people frustrated with their bodies and menstrual cycle, almost like they are at war with their bodies. By tracking and being aware of your cycle, you can create a better relationship with your period. Perhaps you wonder how to bond with your body. Here’s a 30-minute activity you can do yourself to understand, listen and connect with your body.

First, set the mood: Do you need to head out to the park by your house or climb into your closet or cozy bed? Grab a journal and some coloring goodies. Even burning a candle or incense can help your mind signal to your body that you can relax and settle in. Give yourself time to settle.

Centering:

Take a couple of minutes to sit quietly. Music or sound can help mute outside noise. This fireplace and rain sound mix is one of my favorites. Check in with yourself. How does your body feel? You can shake or wiggle, as sometimes the tension out of your body needs to be moved or stretched out. Take a few big breaths from your stomach.

If you place your hands on your stomach you’ll know when you are breathing deeply. You’ll be able to notice your hands moving with your breath. Acknowledge any thoughts that come into your mind and let them pass. Allow yourself to be in this moment and not have to do for anyone, including yourself.

Quote:

My bones say,

I need more magic.

More sacred.

More real

More tangible rest.

My bones ache for strength for words,

And to stretch tall,

My bones scream for believing they won’t break.

My bones are ready and await.

My belly says, I’m full of snacks,

But hungry for truth.

For more.

To listen to my craving.

To stop snacking and start feeding.

My heart says peace.

You are okay.

You are okay.

You are okay.

Journal:

What does the quote bring up for you? Is your body asking for anything? Can you notice what resonates or doesn’t here?

Creative Endeavor:

Get cozy, lie down, or find a comfortable place to sit. Listen to the Embodiment Meditation.

Journal:

Draw a blank figure on the paper. Starting at your feet and working your way up, draw what you experienced in your meditation. Are there certain colors that jump out? How do you draw what you remembered or saw?

Creative Endeavor Part II:

Write a letter from your body to yourself for this activity. What would your body like you to know? What are they (your body) trying to tell you?
